Dartmoor was designated as a National Park in 1951 and covers an area of some 368 square miles. It is a beautiful moorland landscape with wooded valleys and wind swept Tors. The public is able to roam freely on unenclosed, open moorland around the park on both foot and horseback. There are also about 600 miles of public rights of way. Dartmoor is a rich habitat for wildlife and has a wealth of archaeological remains. Throughout the year Dartmoor is an exceptionally beautiful place to visit.

A visit to Dartmoor will deliver many special memories to cherish. Green fields, hemmed with hedgerows and dry-stone walls, rise above river gorges and wooded valleys. The wild, open moor stretches away above grazed by Dartmoor ponies and Blackface sheep, its summits crowned with dramatic wind hewn tors of granite.

Dartmoor is a living, working landscape. At the same time haunted by the ghosts of the past - today's farmers tread in the steps of Bronze Age man, medieval monks and ‘tinners’. Visit Dartmoor and you will find yourself spellbound.

Tavistock, an ancient town over 900 years old, makes a fine base for visiting Dartmoor. Explore its quaint streets and museum and the Benedictine Abbey ruins before venturing further afield. Or maybe a traditional market town nestling in the northern foothills of Dartmoor, Okehampton, would be to your liking.

To the west of Dartmoor is the Tamar Valley, steeped in history and again designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Tamar Valley is a rich environment for wildlife, particularly the estuary, which is an important haven for birds such as the avocet and little egret.

You will find something for all tastes in the Tamar Valley - walking, trips on river and train, and charming villages. Local attractions, mining heritage, beautiful historic houses and glorious gardens make for a great mix. There are plenty of opportunities to relax in a pub, cafe or restaurant to sample the delicious local food.
