North Devon has a great variety of beautiful scenery - rolling green hills, richly varied woodlands, rivers - both calm and spectacular, rocky coves and sandy beaches. North Devon is somewhere to visit all year round.
North Devon also has many good quality tourist attractions. For the children there are The Big Sheep and The Milky Way, both of which include all weather attractions. For relaxation in the open but away from the beaches there are superb gardens to visit. There are extensive gardens at Rosemoor, Marwood Hill and Docton Mill along with the gardens in the grounds of Tapley Park and Hartland Abbey. Indoors, there are the interesting Dartington Crystal and Torrington 1646, putting the fun back into history, these being just a couple of miles apart in Torrington. You may be equally happy to wander and explore narrow cobbled streets of the towns and villages, or just sit on the quay and watch the boats go by. If you prefer to be active, there are pathways both ancient and new around North Devon to suit all abilities. The Little Hangman and Great Hangman hills at Combe Martin are challenging and strenuous walks but well rewarded with outstanding scenery. There are plenty of other walks, Heddon Valley, Watersmeet, Torrington Commons - each one different but all enjoyable.
Other activities include cycling on the Tarka Trail - miles of level tracks left from an old railway, horse riding, quads and go-karts, paintballing, sailing and 10 pin bowling. Exmoor National Park is a particular feature for North Devon, the park contains magnificent landscapes and the central plateau of open moorland is remote and spacious. Click here for more Exmoor information. Amongst all the wonderful countryside there are a few towns! Barnstaple is the main town in North Devon and as well as plenty of modern shops it has a good theatre, cinema, restaurants pubs and clubs, a large leisure centre and a pannier market. You will receive a friendly welcome in other busy North Devon Towns of Bideford, Ilfracombe, South Molton and many small towns each their own character. There are several very good golf courses in North Devon each one set amongst beautiful settings. From the commons at Torrington, to the Braunton Burrows course at Saunton Sands, impressively designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. There is also surfing (or sandcastles!) on the 3 mile beach at Saunton. There are other great beaches in Woolacombe, a blue-flag beach, which has been voted one of the world's top ten. Just around the headland is Croyde, a Seaside Award beach and a surfers dream.
North Devon offers an exciting choice of attractions too. Take a trip on the Tarka line, visit the Exmoor zoo, a dinosaur park or gnome reserve, walk round beautiful gardens or enjoy the peace of nature reserves -- there is something here for every interest. North Devon's rich diversity of landscape and attractions make it a guaranteed favourite with visitors - families, couples or singles - for a holiday or short break at all times of year.
