South Devon encompasses two regions of Devon known as the The South Hams and the English Riviera.
The South Hams lies on the south coast
of Devon, between Torbay and
Plymouth, and is mostly within an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, with stunning coastline, broad estuaries, golden
beaches and rolling countryside.
The English Riviera covers the three South Devon towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. This is the ideal place to relax, to soak up the atmosphere, to take in the scenery, the parks and the gardens, and to experience an enjoyable holiday in a classical English seaside resort.
Torquay's waterfront is packed with
lively pavement cafes, bars and chic seafood restaurants, and the selection of
unique boutiques is to die for. Catch the latest show at
Babbacombe Theatre.
At night you have a choice of theatres, offering a great selection of shows. For additional nightlife and superb shopping are the nearby bustling cities of Plymouth and Exeter.
Away from the cities South Devon is blessed with such wonderful scenery and gentle climate it has been attracting visitors for over 250 years. The contrast of river estuaries, hills and charming old towns combined with long warm summers and mild winters make South Devon the year-round holiday destination. South Devon has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country - from tiny sheltered coves to great sweeps of golden sands like Dawlish Warren, and long stretches of pebbles and shingle. Many of the beaches have passed tough tests to prove that they are also some of the safest and cleanest. The coastline is deeply indented by river estuaries, providing safe moorings for boats and refuge too for migrating birds. Moving north, the land climbs steadily up to Dartmoor – click for more information on Dartmoor |
